How to Convert a Photo or Screenshot of a Table to Excel
A table in a picture cannot be added up or sorted. Images to Excel reads the text in your photos, scans and screenshots and puts it into the cells of an Excel workbook, laid out like the picture. Everything happens in your browser.
Convert a picture to Excel, step by step
- Open Images to Excel and choose your picture. You can choose several pictures at once.
- Choose Printed or Handwritten. Handwritten uses a reader made for writing by hand, in English.
- Check the language of the text: English, Bengali or Hindi.
- With several pictures, choose one sheet per picture or all on one sheet.
- Press Convert to Excel. Reading takes a few seconds per picture.
- Download the workbook and check it against the picture.
Take a picture that reads well
- Hold the phone straight above the page, in even light, without your shadow on it.
- Let the table fill most of the picture, and keep it sharp: tap the screen to focus.
- A slightly tilted photo is straightened for you, but a page photographed at a steep angle is harder to read.
- For a table on a screen, take a screenshot instead of a photo.
Handwritten tables
- Choose Handwritten before you press Convert. The handwriting reader (about 23 MB) is downloaded the first time and then kept by your browser.
- Numbers, dates and neat block letters are read best. Joined-up (cursive) writing is harder: check it carefully.
- Write each value inside its own cell, without crossing the lines of the table.
- Dark ink (blue or black) on white paper works best.
What you get
- The text stands in cells in the same places as in the picture, with the table's rows and columns.
- Amounts, quantities and percentages become real numbers. Codes, dates and phone numbers stay as written.
- Several pictures become one sheet each, or one sheet together.
Check before you use it
Text recognition is very good on clear printed text, but it is not perfect: a blurred or tiny character can be read as another one, such as 8 for 3. Compare the totals and important numbers with the picture before you rely on them.
